Evaluation

Evaluation

For my graphic narrative I decided to do a manga. My story was based off two characters. One of my characters was a magical rabbit and one was just a normal girl. The storyline was about the magical rabbit hurting their foot and not being able to transform back into a human. The girl finds the rabbit and nurses it back to health. The girl explains to the rabbit how she is lonely and lives alone. The rabbit then transforms into a human to grant the girl one wish, which is to stay with her. For my graphic narrative I hand drew it and used water colours to colour them in. My graphic narrative is linear as it starts and goes all the way to the end of the story showing the readers what is going to happen at the end.

My manga was aimed at kids and young teenagers so I used bright colours to attract them and had a child friendly storyline. I used a combination of text in the form of speech combined with images to illustrate what is happening. I also used thought bubbles to indicate that that rabbit boy cannot talk whilst he is in the form of a rabbit. The girl is seen in a school uniform to indicate that she is still a school student.

A few things I could have improved was my time management, as I did struggle to keep to deadlines. Another thing I could have improved was adding more backgrounds in my story as some of the panels were quite empty. Also I could have outlined the drawings to create a cleaner effect. The text was also in various different sizes so I think I could have typed the text up instead or use a different layout to make it seem more spacious.

Health and safety

Health and Safety
A few health and safety things that would be considered if produced in a studio. Would be lamps and light boxes. As when they’re used for a long period of time they will heat up. Therefore equipment should be turned off and allowed to cool before touching and they should be switched of after a certain amount of time.

Any paints and art supplies should not be ingested, inhaled or put near the eye as this can cause irritation and possible health issues. These supplies should be store safely in containers and transported in their original containers with lids on securely.

Considerations

My graphic narrative will be aimed at a young target audience, lie little kids and teenagers, between the ages 10-16. I will do this by using child friendly language and no swearing. I will also use cartoon like characters and make a friendly storyline that does not include violence and gore. I will use colourful colours to make it stand out more and capture the interest of younger audiences. I will make the story easy to understand and not too complex so younger people will be able to understand what is going on.

Narrative development

case studies

Osamu Tezuka

Osamu Tezuka was a manga artist, who has written over 700 manga series.  He is a major figure in the manga and anime industry and has helped popularise this industry from his great success.
Osamu’s earlier works were influenced by western comics and animations. Some of his most iconic works are Astro boy, Black Jack and Kimba and the White Lion. Astro boy is what he is most known for, which is basically about a robot boy and his adventures with other characters. The manga was first published in 1952 and the anime started in 1963. Many rebooted versions were made of the series, however they kept to the same art style just with smoother animations and visuals.
Osamu introduced cinematic action into manga and popularised in in post war Japan. He began using cinematic techniques to create more dramatic and psychological effects from the influence of German and French films he saw as a child. He used different angles in his frames and depicted the movement of facial expressions through many frames. He wanted to incorporate different emotions through his work so he started creating stories where the ending is not always happy.

Manga

Manga are comics created in Japan, however many refer manga to a comic drawn in a certain art style. Manga contains many different genres from Action to historical drama. Manga is a major part of Japan and has gained a significant worldwide audience. In Japan manga is usually released in a large manga magazine, which contains many manga stories presenting a single episode which is continued in the next issue. Manga is a major part of Japan’s publishing industry and is generally printed in black and white

Introduction to graphic narrative

Manga
Manga are comics created in Japan, although they are mainly recognised for the style of art they are drawn in rather than the origin. Manga has become a culture and phenomena amongst japan and all over the world. There are a wide range of genres manga is made up of. Manga focuses on unique aesthetics and alluring narratives to capture the interests of readers.

Graphic Novel
A graphic novel is a book made up of comic content. Unlike comic books graphic novels are not superhero based. They’re similar to comic books in the way they are presented in a sequential style to tell a story. A graphic novel is made up of lots of visual content and usually a complex plot.

Comic Books
Comic books are a publication that consists of comic art in the form of panels that represents different scenes. Comic books contain everyday language, slang, and idiom. Comics often contain coloured illustrations with text in a sequence of panels to tell a story. They’re mostly based on super-hero stories.

Photo-story
Photo-stories are cartoon strips which use photographs in place of drawings. Like comics they telling a story through the use of photographs instead of drawn images.
Children’s book

Children’s books uses emphasised images and simplistic texts to tell a story which is aimed at children. They prioritise images over text and some even don’t use text.

Evaluation

Evaluation:
For my animation I started off with some research. I looked at different types of stop-motion animations. I also looked at different ways to animation, like with clay figures or with drawings to help decide the method I wanted to animate. I looked at music videos and professional animations. This gave me a rough idea of what I wanted to do and how I wanted to do it. I came up with a few ideas of what I wanted to do and pitched this to my class. From there I created a storyboard, mind map, and a mood board to create a stronger image of my animation and what I wanted. I planned the types of shots I wanted for each scene and gave a rough estimate of how long I wanted each scene to last. I also thought about the type of music I wanted, which was fun and comedic music, and looked into sound effects that would add to the comedic effect of my animation.

I then started preparing my animation by creating the sets and characters. I wanted two sets as my character were in different settings. One of them is in a hallway with an elevator, whereas the other setting is in a bedroom office. So I created two sets using foam boards I stuck together. I printed off the backgrounds and stuck them to the foam boards. For the bedroom office set I wanted a checked carpet floor. So I used felt and cut them out into squares and stuck them in a checked pattern on the foam board. This created a realistic carpet look for my set. For the characters I decided to draw them with four different expressions each. As I didn’t have a light box not all of them were the same height, however I did my best to draw them with all the same proportions from what I could see. I then cut them out and I decided to leave an outline on them and not cut directly around them, as I wanted it to look more cartoon like and I felt as if this would help with that look. I stuck pieces of foam board at the back of the characters so that they could stand on their own. It was quite hard to do as the foam boards I cut out were different lengths and as I stuck them at an angle they were not stuck at the same angle on every character. So some of the characters stood more at an angle than others. It would have been better if I stuck the characters on a small platform so I could move them around and they wouldn’t be at different angles. I made props like the computer, table and CCTV camera using craft foam. For the computers I just printed an image of the screen and keyboard and stuck them on the craft foam I felt that by adding props I could add more to the sets and establish what was happening in the scenes better.

For the actual production I found it difficult to film as I have a timetable clashing meaning I only attend one lesson, furthermore the room used to animate was rarely free at the times I was free. Therefore I decided to film my animation at home. I filmed my animation using my phone on an app called Stop Motion Studio.  As I wasn’t using a professional video camera I couldn’t set the white balance on my camera so the lighting did look slightly yellow. Also I did my best to film the animation all at once so that the lighting wouldn’t change in between and was a lot more consistent. I didn’t have anything to balance my phone on so it was hard to keep the shot level as it kept moving. This ended up with some of the shots being slightly choppy. Using the app was very helpful as I was able to filming all the scenes for the cat girl and just copy and paste the parts I wanted into the part where I just filmed the other character. I was then able to add music and sound effects to the places I wanted and adjust how loud and quiet I wanted to make them. I saved the video onto my phone where I then exported it onto my Google drive and uploaded onto YouTube.

From this project I have developed planning skills to help develop my animation. I have also learnt how to use different technologies, like the stop motion app and uploading a video onto YouTube. I have also learnt how to edit my animation from this. I have also learnt about different types of camera shots from the shots I have used in my animation, like a close-up and a mid-shot. I have developed my creative ability from the sets and props I made for my animation, also from character designs and how I made the characters stand up. I have also had to do a lot of time management as my timetable clash meant I had to go back and catch up on a lot of missed work. Furthermore it meant I had to do a lot of the work in my own time, whilst keeping to the deadlines.

As I used a different app to film my animation and not the software Istopmotion I found it hard to keep to the timings I of each scene, as there was not really a timer showing you how long parts of the animation were. Another thing I changed as well was the position of the male character, instead a side view I changed it to a front view as I found it easier to film like this. Another complication I had was adding sound effects. I found it hard to find exact sound effects that I wanted to use for my animation, so some of the planned sound effects had to be cut out. My animation is aimed at teenagers and young kids so I made sure no profanities were used in my animation. I used a simplistic storyline so that it is easier to understand what is happening.  I also used bright colours in my animation to attract the attention of the audience. I gave my animation fun music to attract more kids and teenagers and to fit in with the comedic theme of my animation. The sound effects I added also helped create this effect too. I made the expressions and designs of the characters less realistic and drew them in a more cartoon and fun style to show that it is aimed at teenagers and kids, whilst fitting into the theme and genre.

From the feedback I got I did realise that my animation was a bit vague about what was happening and if not told any context it would be hard to figure out what is happening. I should have added text or have added more character expressions and sounds to show a clearer idea of what was happening. The feedback I got did show that they liked the aesthetics of the animation and the details I added, they also liked the sound effects and music that I added to create a fun atmosphere. Someone did mention the outlines I made for the characters and how it would look better if I had cut them out to the character’s exact shape. I think the strengths of my animation is the aesthetics I provided, like the set, characters, and props I made. One of the areas that needs improving is the actual filming of the animation as it was quite choppy and the lighting wasn’t the best and could have been improved a lot more. From my video feedback people liked the sound effects, props, and the artwork of the characters. A few of the things they thought I could have improved was the narrative of my animation as it wasn’t clear what it was about, also I could have made my animation longer and included a few more character facial features rather than the few I had.

My Stop motion animation

Making of my animation

The way I made my animation I download an app called stop motion studio. From this app I was able to record and make my animation with my phone. I took pictures frame by frame and put them in the sequence I wanted. I also added music and sound effects to give the animation more life and to make it more fun. I could not find all the desired sound effects I wanted so I couldn't do some of the things I had planned. Furthermore I didn't have a professional camera or setup so it was quite hard to keep my phone balanced and have consistent lighting.

Character poses

I have begun making my characters with the different poses and expressions I will be needing for my animation. Here are some I did of my character called Lily

Final props and background designs

After drawing out my characters I cut them out and stuck a piece of foam board behind them to help them stand out. I used craft foam to create a table and the monitors and keyboard for one of my scenes. I printed out the monitors screens and keyboard and stuck it on the craft foam to make them more realistic. For my second background I used foam boards again and stuck them together. I printed out my desired background and stuck them on the foam boards.

First background set finished

I stuck the printed wall design onto the foam boards. I also stuck each felt square down onto the grid pattern I made on the foam boards. After this I stuck the foam boards together to create the background set. All I will need to do now is to add props to the set to make it look like a bedroom.

Character profiles

I created character profiles for the characters in my animation I coloured them in so I know what colours I will be using o it can be kept consistent throughout the animation.

storyboard

I created a storyboard that shows an idea of what will happen in my animation. I wrote down what happens in each scene, the type of shot, and the sounds that would be included in the scene.

animation mind map

I created a mind map for my animation and what is going to happen in it and the characters that are in the animation. I also wrote down ideas about the backgrounds and how I will be doing the animation.
